A battle for the ages

TiVo Premiere

Posted: 8/2/10 Category: Concert Reviews

Last week I attended two concerts with two completely different audiences. On Thursday July 29 I saw Aerosmith at the Verizon Ampitheater in Irvine and Saturday July 31 I went to As I Lay Dying at The Paladium in Hollywood. Rather than review the concerts, I've put together a chart to compare and contrast these radically different events.

Old
(Aerosmith)

Young
(As I Lay Dying)

Ticket Price

$68.00 for upper level
$10.00 for wherever the hell I wanted to stand

Support

Cheap Trick

Underoath, Between The Buried And Me, blessthefall, The Acacia Strain, Architects, Cancer Bats, War Of Ages

Parking

$20.00 for VIP parking and I was still very far from the gate. Also, it took a good 45 minutes to get out of the lot.
$10.00 to park across the street. I was out of the lot in 45 seconds.

T-shirts

No way was I going to drop 40 bucks on a shirt. I got a bootleg in the parking lot and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

$20.00 Not bad but for some reason they didn't have any with tour dates on the back. Could have probably got the same thing at Hot Topic for half the price.

24oz Beer

$10.00 Yikes!
$12.00 Yikes +2!

Smoking

Old guys have their own smokes.
Young guys want to bum my smokes.

Volume

Not loud enough. I guess senior citizens can take the racket.
The sound at the Paladium is killer. My sack was vibrating the whole show.

Attire

Sandals and concert T's from the 80's that don't quite fit any more.
Beards and plaid shirts. Also tons of kids wearing glasses. Either metalcore fans are terribly myopic or this is some lame fashion trend.

Parents

Parents dragged their kids to this.
Kids dragged their parents to this.

Pit

Full of rich people that paid hundreds of dollars for a seat close to the stage.
Full of kids that would be in tears if it were a Hatebreed show.

Breakdowns

Requires oxygen and possibly an adrenaline shot to the heart.
Overused by virtually every band on the ticket.

Air

Even in an amphitheater it was hard to avoid the 420 fog.

Smelled like a mix of zit cream and Axe body spray.

Ground

Covered with puke, piss, and the passed out people that puked and pissed.

Covered with sad teenagers sitting on the floor texting.

Jugs

Too many 50 year old women showing off their saggy road-worn boobs.

Too many overweight dudes showing off their jiggly boy-boobs.

What I really want to know

Does Steven Tyler know that all that plastic surgery is making him look Asian?

How do 8 bands charging 10 bucks for a ticket make any money on tour?

It's hard to declare a winner here. I thoroughly enjoyed both concerts, but neither crowd was what I would call "my kind of people." I'm a lot more at home at a Slayer show.
