Avenged Sevenfold's newest album
Nightmare sold 162,500 copies in its first week of release landing it
at the top of the charts. It's not just the #1 metal album or #1 debut, it is the de facto #1 album in the country. This
marks the band's first trip to the top of the heap. Their previously highest chart position was at #4 with 2007's self-titled
album. As an added bonus,
Nightmare knocked white rapping curiosity Eminem out of the top position.
The
numbers are quite impressive considering nobody buys CDs anymore. The 165,500 copies moved is nearly double what A7X did with
their last release. It's great to see a metal album top the charts. It's even more satisfying when you look at some of the
garbage that pollutes the top 10: Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Eminem. Obviously, Avenged fans are loyal, but hopefully this
signifies a leap to the big leagues for the Orange County boys. They certainly deserve a place along side metal arena headliners
Slipknot and Metallica. And they definitely deserve it more than perplexingly popular acts like Disturbed and Korn.
I
was going to do an album review, but judging by the sales, most of you already have it. I will say this: Nightmare
is one hell of a good album. It's pure Avenged Sevefold, but there is an added level of introspection and maturity. There
are some sad songs about the loss of their drummer and brother Jimmy Sullivan, but there's no lack of speed, aggression and
melody. As a drummer myself, I notice the absence of The Rev, but it doesn't detract from the excellently written songs. If
you don't have it. Get it. If you already bought one, buy another. Let's see if we can keep this thing at #1 for another week.
Think of it as a great way of telling Eminem to go fuck himself.
