Lists
If you are having a Halloween party this year, do your guests a favor and don't get one of those Haunted Hits CDs. Nobody
wants to spend the evening listening to Ghostbusters and Purple People Eaters. Be creative and come up with a terrifyingly
original playlist. For my party, I've come up with a group of songs themed around zombies. It's chocked full of flesh-eating
things that won't stay in the grave. Feel free to plagiarize my list or use it as an idea-starter for your own evil soundtrack.

"Partytime" - 45 Grave
Though
this song isn't really about zombies, it will be forever linked to the walking dead due to its inclusion in the classic horror/comedy
film "Return Of The Living Dead." I can't hear this one without thinking of that eye-balled skeleton popping out of the grave.
Partytime is actually a pretty sick song about a 5 year old girl that is tortured raped and murdered by her mom's boyfriend.

"Dance Of The Dead" - Corrosion Of Conformity
This
North Carolina hardcore/metal crossover act completely changed gears with the 1991 release of "Blind." The stoner/doom grooves
on this album were a far cry from the mantic crossover thrash they were known for. Dance Of The Dead is one of the standout
tracks on this album. I doubt it's about zombies, but it sure seems like it is.

"Zombie Ritual" - Death
One
of the best tracks from death metal pioneer Chuck Schuldiner's first release. There's no hidden message or implied meaning.
The songs is about zombies. More specifically, it's about a zombie with maggots for a penis that chops down his victims with
an axe. If that ain't art, I don't know what is.

|
"Life Returns" - Dr. Know
There
is a great story in this Nardcore classic. It would seem that Mary has murdered her husband John and hidden him in the basement.
However, some mysterious force brings John back to life so he can get his revenge on Mary. Also, it's just a kick-ass tune.
I loosely based my story "Overtime" from Man Made Monsters on this song.

"Rising Of The Dead" - Exciter
These
Canadian proto-thrashers should have never went for a mainstream sound because they had it going on with their first release.
Rising Of The Dead is one of my favorite songs from these guys. It doesn't require a whole lot of explanation. It's about
the dead rising.

|
"Zombie Eaters" - Faith No More
This
is a great tune and it has "zombie" in the title, but I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the living dead. Like a
lot of stuff from Mike Patton's mind it could be about anything or nothing. The best I can figure is this is a song about
a guy who is a needy baby. Is he a baby zombie that needs human flesh? That would be cool.

|
"Braineaters" - Misfits
You
can't have a halloween, let alone zombie, playlist without including the godfathers of horror punk. This is a simple love
love about eating brains. Zombies like brains for dinner, brains for lunch, brains for breakfast and brains for brunch. Night
Of The LIving Dead and Astro Zombies are two other excellent walking dead songs from this album.
|
|
|
"Zombie Stomp" - Ozzy Osbourne
With
all of the doom and gloom surrounding Ozzy's music, both as a solo artist and with Black Sabbath, it's surprising this is
the only one about zombies. And really, it seems more like it's about Ozzy being completely drugged up and dancing around
in a stupor. Anyways, it's a great song and is zombie-related.

|
|
"Zombie Creeping Flesh" - Peter And The Test Tube Babies
With
a catalog of drunken punk anthems, these Brits came out of left field with a song about the dead rising from the grave and
feasting on the living. However, this zombie tale has a twist. Apparently, while filming one of his Living Dead films, George
A. Romero is consumed by the extras that turned out to be real zombies. Oh the irony.

|
"Night Of The Living Baseheads" - Public Enemy
I
don't really like newer hip hop, but I dig some old-school rap. Especially Public Enemy. Plus I wanted to throw a little flavor
in my playlist. This song takes the Night Of The LIving dead premise and gives it an urban street vibe. The zombies are the
zonked-out drug addicts roaming the streets in search of sustenance. It's not brains they're after; it's cocaine.

|
|
"Re-Alive" - Sam Black Church
I've
loved this song since it came out and I swear I thought it was about zombies. I just read the lyrics for the first time since
I bought the CD in the early 90's and it turns out it's about the Phoenix rising from the ashes. I don't care. It's about
something rising from the dead.

|
|
"Waking The Dead" - Suicidal Tendencies
These
Venice Beach punk/metalheads don't generally write stuff about zombies and such, but on Waking The Dead they weave quite a
tale. It's about some grave robbers that accidentally open the gates of hell and unleash a zombie apocalypse upon the world.
Oops.

|
|
"Zombie Attack" - Tankard
From
the album of the same name, these German thrashers unleash one hell of a zombie opus. Usually these guys write songs about
beer and their concerns for the purity of beer. Here they have combined that preoccupation with alcohol and the living dead.
It's about a guy who watches a zombie movie, gets drunk, then wakes up just in time to get eaten by a zombie.
