In 2005/2006 Killian played for the Ventura Mariners Squirt B team and Gianluca played goalie for the West Valley Wolves
Squirt B team. They would face each other 3 times that season. In two of the games the Mariners won handily and in the third
game the Wolves managed an impressive tie against the mightier squad from Simi. In both wins Killian had hat-tricks, while
in the tie Gianluca completely stoned #40 (he was #14 back then). The following season, Gianluca was in net for the Valencia
Express Pee Wee B team while Killian was playing for the West Valley Wolves Squirt B. As fate would have it, Killian ended
up playing for a Pee Wee team in a tournament against Gianluca's Express. They played twice, with the Express winning both
including the championship. If memory serves me correctly, Gianluca played only one of the two games. So in the awesome rivalry,
Killian has the slight edge in wins while Gianluca has a big advantage in banners.
October 31, 2005 - "A Kinder Gentler Report"
Last
week I created a firestorm of controversy with my article, so this weeks game
report will be watered down. We live in a politically correct time where it’s
considered bad form to have an opinion about anything. I will no longer call
attention to poor officiating, because even though these guys are paid for
their job and don’t take it very seriously, they shouldn’t be held accountable
for their actions. I won’t say a thing about dirty players from other teams because
kids shouldn’t learn there are consequences for their behavior. I won’t even
mention individual players that scored goals, because it might make the kids
who didn’t score feel bad.
Hey,
I’m just kidding. If some dude wants to cut and past my article, ignoring all
international copywrite laws, and try to start something let him. I am biased.
My kid plays for this team. I’ve grown fond of all of our kids and parents. If
I see something that ain’t right I’ll say it. And for all those outside of the
organization that don’t like it, I think you know where you can stick it.
The
Super Squirt Ventura Marines played host to the West Valley Wolves in the wee
hours of Sunday morning. It looked like both teams were skating on molasses.
One parent commented that the game looked like it was being played in slow
motion. Thankfully, the early start time put both teams on equal footing. Still
trying to recover from all the partying the night before, our kids got off to a
slow start, letting the Wolves score on the first shift. This woke them up a
little bit. Corey Pelone shook off the sleep and started attacking. Linemates
Danny O’Donnell and Chad DiLauro generated some nice chances. Nick Guttenkunst,
who I know for a fact was at the game, and Nick Cerezo fed off of Killian
Anderson’s aggressive forecheck.
The
line of the day was Matt Johnson, Thomas Graves, and Kyle McNeil. Covered by
two guys, Thomas took a pass from Matt and somehow muscled it in for the team’s
first goal. With the game tied, the defense clamped down. Led by Justin Janik
the blue-liners rubbed out all threats. Luke Tickle played physical. Tom
Dobrokhot was intimidating. Mitchel Nash and Jared Turcotte played it smart.
Dylan Levy was solid in net, keeping his team in contention. For most of the game,
our kids held the puck and took it to the Wolves. Unfortunately, the Mariners
found themselves two men down and West Valley took advantage.
Down
a goal with time running out, it looked like the boys might lose. The goalie
got pulled for an extra attacker. The Mariners poured it on. Then, Big Matt
slipped one in with 25 seconds left. The Wolves may have scored early, but our
boys scored late. The game ended in 2-2 tie. A win would have been nice, but
we’ll take the point.
I
had been planning to do a whole Halloween themed article this week. Basically
it was about Dr. Paddystein and his assistants Raygor, The Creature From The
Nash Lagoon, and the Jerewolf creating a beast known as the Marinermonster.
Unfortunately, we were a couple of coaches short this week so it didn’t work
out. Also, I usually check the accuracy of my reports against the stats, but
I’ve been denied access. If any of the info is wrong, please understand my
heart was in the right place.
Incidentally,
I felt the officiating in the Wolves game was good. If I’m going to slam it
when it’s bad, I should praise it when it’s adequate.
February 25, 2006 - “Dances With Wolves”
For
the Ventura Mariners Super Squirts game on Saturday, the team would be without
Kyle McNeil. While we would surely miss his hustle and heads-up play, we also
would be missing his dad. Going into Panorama City, I think all of us wished we
had some police back-up.
For
the games against the West Valley Wolves, Chayce Marnell joined the line of
Killian Anderson and Nick Cerezo. This trio would prove to be lethal. When
super-star Chayce had the puck, his wingers crashed the net. Killian hammered
home a hat-trick in this arrangement. Nick C. had a tremendous outing with two
goals, and Chayce put one in himself. The Wolves gave the boys an early scare,
but that was it. This game was all about Mariner dominance.
Mr.
Consistency Matt Johnson scored a goal, proving his reputation as one of the
hardest working players on the team. Jared Turcotte finished the scoring with a
wicked wrister that made his dad envious. Chad DiLauro has being showing some
extra jump as of late and the only way the Wolves could stop him was to
double-team him and haul him down. Danny O’Donnell had some glorious chances
and played a great game. Nick “The Simi Valley Slasher” cemented his role as
team agitator, creating mayhem and getting under the skin of the opposition.
Mitchell Nash with that deep Hawaiian tan put a lot of shots on net and did a
nice job of getting back on defense. According to the scoresheet: Chayce had 4
assists, Nick C. had 2, Mitchell, Danny and Justin Janik each got 1 helper.
The
defense didn’t let much get through. Tom Dobrokhot is one of the best
one-on-one defenders, taking the body and separating it from the puck. Luke
Tickle is a fan favorite and here’s why: He rushed into the zone and mowed down
some poor kid to keep the puck alive. As he stood over the fallen child, he
looked at a bunch of us parents through the glass and gave a smirk. Justin
Janik had another great game, both clamping down defensively and jumping up on
the rush to generate offense. I have to give the Wolves credit for bravery.
They stood in front of Thomas Graves’ artillery shots. Aside from evoking
terror, Thomas has also become proficient at moving the puck out of the zone.
Captain Corey Pelone deserves a lot of credit. He plays where his team needs
him the most. If he’s up front he scores, if he’s in the back he shuts it down.
The goals that Crease Keeper Dylan Levy let in were weird ones to say the
least. When it came down to it, he was a brick wall giving the Wolves nothing
to shoot at.
The
Mariners played a superb game and were rewarded with an 8-3 victory. They
earned two more points in the play-off race. The team has some real momentum.
This is the perfect time of year to get on a roll.
Reese
got rear-ended and Karen got pulled over for being a suspected car-jacker, but
I think we all made it out of Panorama City unscathed.
